Society of St. Vincent de Paul
The Duquesne conference of Society of St. Vincent de Paul is part of an organization that spans across the world to bring hope and compassion to those with all types of need.
History and Mission
Begun in 1833 by young college students in Paris, France, the Society continues to fulfill the same goal of its founding members: to demonstrate the Christian way of life through acts of love and service.
Working with the Homeless
Our conference's main ministry is serving those experiencing homelessness and poverty in downtown Pittsburgh. We gather every Sunday night at 7:30pm in Laval House and walk downtown to offer hot meals, clean clothes, toiletries, resources, and friendship to any one in need. Along our route we visit some long-time friends and make new ones. Sometimes they share stories or concerns with us and we listen and try to help as best we can. By ministering to their spiritual and personal needs and desires, we show solidarity with them and affirm their dignity as human persons.
The Duquesne chapter is open to all students, faculty, staff, and alumni who have a desire to serve the poor and vulnerable. We welcome you to join us at 7:30pm on Sunday nights at Laval House, for one of our weekly meetings. To sign up for a particular Sunday, follow the link below:
Sign-ups are available up to one month in advance.
Our conference also runs a blog for those unable to attend our Sunday night missions or who are simply interested in learning more about poverty and homelessness. The purpose of the blog is to spread awareness and to provide an outlet for students to express their individual thoughts, concerns, feelings, and reactions to poverty and homelessness. Read it at https://duquesnesvdp.wordpress.com and email firstname.lastname@example.org to submit articles.
