IRS Form 1098-T

You may be eligible for education tax credits if you are paying education costs for yourself or a member of your immediate family. IRS Form 1098-T will enable you to determine if you qualify.

Duquesne University is required to provide the IRS Form 1098-T for all enrolled students, as long as there was a reportable transaction on their account.  We must also provide the enrollment and financial information to the IRS.  Transactions that are identified as reportable include tuition and fees a student must pay to be enrolled in a degree program.  If the student is enrolled in a course for which no academic credit is given, even if the student is in a degree program, the University will not provide a 1098-T.  Also, please note that nonresident alien students will not automatically be provided the form.

Duquesne University has partnered with Heartland ECSI for the 1098T forms.  To obtain your form online, log into www.heartlandecsi.com.

Duquesne University reports the amount billed for qualifying tuition and fees in Box 2 and the total amount of scholarships and grants in Box 5.    It is the student’s responsibility to determine the taxability of scholarships or grants received. For information, please log onto www.irs.gov and access IRS Publication 970: Tax Benefits for Education. The IRS has also developed the Interactive Tax Assistant, an online progression of questions to help taxpayers determine their eligibility for either the AOTC, the Lifetime Learning Credit, or the above-the-line deduction for tuition and fees.

The amounts in either box are for the calendar year (January 1 through December 31. Often times, tuition for the spring term is billed in the prior calendar year.   For example, charges for the spring 2018 term are billed in November and December, 2017.  These amounts billed are reflected on the 2017 1098-T.  Detailed information can be found online in QuikPAY; login to  www.duq.edu/dori and select:
